    The molecular basis for tropomyosin isoform diversity.James P. Lees-Miller & David M. Helfman - 1991 - Bioessays 13 (9):429-437.
The tropomyosins are a family of actin filament binding proteins. In multicellular animals, they exhibit extensive cell type specific isoform diversity. In this essay we discuss the genetic mechanisms by which this diversity is generated and its possible significance to cellular function.

Moral Issues of Human-Non-Human Primate Neural Grafting.Mark Greene, Kathryn Schill, Shoji Takahashi, Alison Bateman-House, Tom Beauchamp, Hilary Bok, Dorothy Cheney, Joseph Coyle, Terrence Deacon, Daniel Dennett, Peter Donovan, Owen Flanagan, Steven Goldman, Henry Greely, Lee Martin & Earl Miller - 2005 - Science 309 (5733):385-386.
The scientific, ethical, and policy issues raised by research involving the engraftment of human neural stem cells into the brains of nonhuman primates are explored by an interdisciplinary working group in this Policy Forum. The authors consider the possibility that this research might alter the cognitive capacities of recipient great apes and monkeys, with potential significance for their moral status.

  8. On defining 'disease'.W. Miller Brown - 1985 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 10 (4):311-328.
This essay examines several recent philosophical attempts to define ‘disease’. Two prominent ones are considered in detail, an objective approach by Christopher Boorse and a normative approach by Caroline Whitbeck. Both are found to be inadequate for a variety of reasons, though Whitbeck's is superior because of her careful preliminary distinctions and because of its normative approach which is more nearly in accord with medical and lay usage. The paper concludes with a discussion of the nature of such efforts at (...)

The art of conjecture: Nicholas of Cusa on knowledge.Clyde Lee Miller - 2021 - Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press.
Through close examination of the texts, the author shows how 15th-century philosopher Nicholas of Cusa developed an understanding of uncertainty that opened the way for human intelligence, despite its inherent weaknesses, to find out more about ourselves, the world, and what lies beyond.

Understanding and Ontology in Traditional African Thought.Lee Brown - 2004 - In M. Brown Lee (ed.), African Philosophy: New and Traditional Perspectives. New York: Oup Usa.
This essay discusses how ontological commitments within modern Western culture are no less problematic than those within traditional African cultures. Each posits unobservable entities to explain the experiential world, and neither has ready access to those posits held as grounding or as otherwise determining what is experienced. It looks at the conceptions of persons in Western and African traditions and suggests that each tradition can learn from the other.

Corporate Political Activity and Free Riding under Market Uncertainty: An Investigation of TARP Funding.Lee Warren Brown, John A. De Leon & Abdul A. Rasheed - 2019 - Business and Society Review 124 (1):115-143.
Given that the benefits of Corporate Political Activity (CPA) are usually granted in the form of favorable industry regulation that benefits all industry participants rather than a single firm, small politically inactive firms are often able to take advantage of the benefits from CPA without investing in them. We argue that the free‐riding problem is context specific. Situations of extreme uncertainty create institutional voids that enable individual firms to more fully appropriate the returns from their CPA. In this paper, we (...)

  27. Inferring Expertise in Knowledge and Prediction Ranking Tasks.Michael D. Lee, Mark Steyvers, Mindy de Young & Brent Miller - 2012 - Topics in Cognitive Science 4 (1):151-163.
We apply a cognitive modeling approach to the problem of measuring expertise on rank ordering problems. In these problems, people must order a set of items in terms of a given criterion (e.g., ordering American holidays through the calendar year). Using a cognitive model of behavior on this problem that allows for individual differences in knowledge, we are able to infer people's expertise directly from the rankings they provide. We show that our model-based measure of expertise outperforms self-report measures, taken (...)

The Roles of Implicit Understanding of Engineering Ethics in Student Teams’ Discussion.Eun Ah Lee, Magdalena Grohman, Nicholas R. Gans, Marco Tacca & Matthew J. Brown - 2017 - Science and Engineering Ethics 23 (6):1755-1774.
Following previous work that shows engineering students possess different levels of understanding of ethics—implicit and explicit—this study focuses on how students’ implicit understanding of engineering ethics influences their team discussion process, in cases where there is significant divergence between their explicit and implicit understanding. We observed student teams during group discussions of the ethical issues involved in their engineering design projects. Through the micro-scale discourse analysis based on cognitive ethnography, we found two possible ways in which implicit understanding influenced the (...)

Leaving Plato’s Cave.Patrick Lee Miller - 2016 - American Association of Philosophy Teachers Studies in Pedagogy 2:94-116.
In Republic, Plato presents a pedagogy whose crucial component is the conversion of the student’s soul. This is clearest in the Allegory of the Cave, where the prisoner begins her liberation by turning herself away from the images on the wall. Conversion is not something we professors typically seek to provoke in a philosophy course, even when we teach Plato. But if this were our goal, what could we do to achieve it within the limits of the modern university? I (...)

The Religious Significance of von Hildebrand’s Notion of Second Order Beauty.Robert Lee Miller - 2017 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 91 (4):589-605.
In his Aesthetics, Dietrich von Hildebrand analyzes an interesting form of beauty adhering to audible and visible things that he calls second order beauty. In this paper, I will attempt to develop something which von Hildebrand recognizes, but which he himself does not fully develop: the religious significance of second order beauty. In particular, I wish to show that an aesthetic experience of this second order beauty can engender an encounter with God not in the “abstract,” but rather as a (...)

Truth, Trump, Tyranny: Plato and the Sophists in an Era of ‘Alternative Facts’.Patrick Lee Miller - 2018 - In Angel Jaramillo Torres & Marc Benjamin Sable (eds.), Trump and Political Philosophy: Leadership, Statesmanship, and Tyranny. Springer Verlag. pp. 17-32.
There are five attitudes to truth: that of the philosopher, the truth-teller, the liar, the sophist, and the tyrant. After discussing the two most famous Greek Sophists, Gorgias and Protagoras, this essay argues that Trump’s attitude to truth while campaigning was that of a sophist: someone who is indifferent to the truth, using words only to acquire money, fame, and power. When he became president, however, his attitude changed to that of the tyrant described by Plato: someone who uses power (...)
